How It Works

Step 1: Discover

Choose a book you love — one that deserves more than to sit on a shelf. Before you set it free, give it a BCID (BookCrossing ID) so its journey can be tracked. You can get a BCID right here on the Open Sidewalk Project site or directly from BookCrossing.

Step 2: Reflect

Take a moment with the story. Write down a thought, memory, or question it left you with. This reflection travels with the book, becoming part of the living archive.

Step 3: Set Free

  • Wild Release: Leave it somewhere for a stranger — a café table, a park bench, a train seat.
  • Direct Release: Hand it to a friend, family member, or even someone unexpected. Every release sets a story in motion.

Step 4: Mark The Moment

Log your release on the website with your note, reflection, or photo. Be sure to include the BCID so the story can connect to the archive — proof that stories don’t end when the book closes. They keep traveling, reshaping lives as they go.
